Cardinal Newman, TOB Campus & the Rosary
This Sunday the Church will canonize Blessed John Henry Newman. Among many things, this soon-to-be saint is well noted for his efforts to restore the authenticity of Catholic education.
In a recent article entitled To Restore Integrity: Newman’s Idea of Education, featured in The Catholic Thing, Patrick Rielly describes:
“We might explain Newman’s integrity in his devotion to education – both the moral imperative of forming every person individually according to God’s plan and the educational objective of cultivating the intellect, so that a Catholic can recognize, share, and defend truth.”
Ruah Woods Press, having a desire to reach students’ hearts with the same enthusiasm that Newman displayed, has developed ROOTED: Theology of the Body K-12 Curriculum. With this curriculum, teachers in grades K-12 can teach authentic Christian anthropology – of being created in the image and likeness of God and the unique dignity and purpose for each life that this good news reveals – according to the original work of Pope St. John Paul II’s Theology of the Body (TOB).
TOB Campus
Awareness of this curriculum is spreading across the US, with interest from diocese in all 50 states. Many are making the decision to become a TOB Campus: a community of persons where everybody is seen as a gift.
As a TOB Campus, schools take deliberate, programmatic steps to promote Theology of the Body concepts to their staff, faculty and students. At the end of the year, schools submit a ‘Fruit of the Spirit’ report which is posted on the TOB Campus website to share and inspire others.
Cultivating a TOB Campus with the Rosary
One method of cultivating a TOB Campus community is to pray the rosary with On a Mission to Love.
Created with Catholic school and families in mind On a Mission to Love is designed to help bring the rosary to life in classrooms and homes. Inspired by the writings of Pope St. John Paul II, it shares the beautiful truth of God’s plan for humanity. While meditating on the mysteries of the rosary and the reflections in this book, children come to a deeper understanding of who they are and why God made them.
Recalling the words of St. John Paul II:
“As the family goes, so goes the nation, and the whole world in which we live.”
Parents are the primary educators of their children (CCC 2223). The family is where it all begins. According to Newman, if we want to restore the integrity of education, it is critical for parents and teachers to cultivate genuine partnerships in the care of souls. Praying the rosary at home and at school with On a Mission to Love is a great place to start.
